Swimming freshman Jacob Jarzen, the Big Ten Freshman of the Year, will compete in the 2010 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships March 25-27 in Columbus, Ohio in the 100 butterfly and the 100 and 200 backstroke.

Jarzen set three school records at the Big Ten Championships, finishing the 100 butterfly in 47.01 seconds, the 100 backstroke in 48.28 seconds and the 200 backstroke in 1:44:43.

He also competed on the school record-setting 400 medley, 400 freestyle and 800 freestyle teams.

Jarzen qualified for the NCAAs by meeting a minimum established time for the events he entered in.

Bracamonte earns conference honors

MSU softball junior Jessica Bracamonte was named Big Ten Player of the Week following an 11-hit week that helped her team go 4-3.

The junior center fielder went 11-for-18 on the week, including two extra base hits, four RBIs and five runs scored. She hit better than .500 in six of the team’s seven games to improve her overall batting average to .383.

She had a .778 slugging percentage for the week and went 3-for-3 with three RBIs in a game against George Washington. Bracamonte, from Hacienda Heights, Calif., is the first Spartan to win Player of the Week honors since Lindsey Hansen won the title on March 2, 2009.

The Spartans are 10-13 and will head to Oxford, Ohio for games against Miami (Ohio), Robert Morris, Canisius and Toledo this weekend.
