Wrestlers finish 7th at Big Tens
The MSU wrestling team recorded two top-three finishes on the way to a seventh-place finish at the Big Ten Championships on Sunday.
No. 4-ranked 133-pound senior Franklin Gomez, the two-time defending Big Ten champion and last season’s national champion, was defeated in the semifinals Saturday by Iowa’s No. 3 Daniel Dennis and went on to finish third.
Dennis was the only wrestler to defeat Gomez during the regular season, earning an overtime decision on Jan. 31 to snap Gomez’s 29-match winning streak.
The two needed overtime again Saturday, as Gomez’s reversal with eight seconds remaining tied the score at four before the overtime session.
Gomez was called for locked hands in the overtime period, which gave Dennis a one-point win.
Junior Anthony Jones Jr. finished third by upsetting the No. 3 and No. 4 seeds in his 157-pound class Sunday.
Jones was not highly-seeded entering this weekend’s conference championships, but battled to earn a spot in the NCAA championships with his performance.
No. 11-ranked 149-pound sophomore David Cheza and 174-pound sophomore Ian Hinton, along with Gomez, qualified for the NCAA Championships, which take place March 18-20.
The Spartans (8-8-1) improved upon last season’s 11th-place finish at the Big Ten Championships despite competing against eight ranked conference opponents.
