The MSU ice hockey and field hockey teams released their schedules for the upcoming season Wednesday.

The ice hockey schedule includes 16 homes games against hockey powers Maine, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Miami (Ohio) and Michigan. The Spartans also will play Colorado College in the first round of the Great Lakes Invitational.

But the most intriguing game on the schedule is a matchup with U-M at Michigan Stadium on Dec. 11. The game will be the second outdoor contest between two of college hockey’s fiercest rivals. The Spartans hosted the Wolverines on Oct. 6, 2001 at Spartan Stadium. The game saw a then-world record crowd of 74,544 watch the teams finish in a 3-3 tie.

This year’s game at Michigan Stadium is expected to set a new world record with more than 100,000 fans.

Last season, the Spartans finished 19-16-6 overall and second in the CCHA standings but missed out on the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive year.

The defending Big Ten champion field hockey team will see four of last year’s NCAA Tournament qualifiers in its upcoming season.

MSU opens its schedule by hosting the 2010 Champions Invitational Tournament from Aug. 28-29, where it will face Central Michigan and either Duke or Louisville.

The Spartans begin defense of their Big Ten championship when they open Big Ten play Sept. 24 against Iowa.

MSU also will try to defend its Big Ten Tournament crown in Evanston, Ill., from Nov. 4-7.

Last season, the Spartans went 18-4 overall, winning the conference regular season and tournament titles but fell to Virginia 3-2 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
