  • Summer sports doldrums are here

As I sit at my desk this evening pondering what I’m going to do a blog on, it occurred to me that nothing exciting is going on in the world of sports — especially since my editor Alex Altman conveniently blogged about my potential topic yesterday.

  • A new meaning for outdoor sports

I’ve rediscovered the art of the lawn game. Usually, I only think of lawn games as a tailgating staple, grouped in the same category as beer pong and flip cup tournaments. But after a couple of weekends of hanging with my family and engaging in a few games of Wiffle Ball and cornhole (aka bags, aka Hillbilly Horseshoes), I have a new enthusiasm for them. Here’s why.

Nelson guarantee not going to matter — Pistons to win series

Orlando Magic guard Jameer Nelson guaranteed the Orlando Magic would avoid elimination and defeat the Detroit Pistons in Tuesday’s Game 5 of the Eastern Conference semifinals at The Palace of Auburn Hills.

“We’re going to make some adjustments and we’re going to win this game,” Nelson said, according to The Associated Press. “I’m not being arrogant or cocky or anything like that. I think (Saturday) we let it slip out of our hands. Game 2 we let it slip out of our hands.

“We’re going to win this game in Detroit.”

The comment, of course, came on the heels of Orlando’s 90-89 loss to the Pistons — a game in which Orlando magically found a way to lose, despite having led by 15 points midway through the third quarter and the Pistons playing without their most valuable player, guard Chauncey Billups.

All due respect, Mr. Nelson, but those comments are cocky and they are arrogant. Your team has lost 10 of its last 11 postseason games to the Pistons. Not enough? Your team has lost those games by an average of 11.4 points!

So what makes you think your team is going to storm into the Palace and steal this game?

All your comments did was ignite a Pistons team that in past years has been complacent in games like this, and give them something to laugh about.

You think your team has a chance, Mr. Nelson? Well, the joke’s on you.

Even if Billups’ strained hamstring lingers and keeps him sidelined Tuesday, your chances of winning are still slimmer than Stan Van Gundy’s waistline. Wait … bad example. Well, you know what I mean.

The Pistons have been to the Eastern Conference Finals five straight seasons, and they’re hungrier for a championship than ever before. They have too much talent, too much experience, and too much moxie to take this game for granted.

So if you guarantee, Mr. Nelson, that your team will win Tuesday, you must believe in magic.

I sure don’t, and I doubt the Pistons do either.
