Pistons', Red Wings' success overshadows Tigers' failure

The Detroit Tigers are lucky.

Sure, they own the worst record in the American League, have been shut out seven times in 37 games, and have the second highest team ERA in baseball.

But thanks to the postseason success exhibited by the Detroit Red Wings and Detroit Pistons, people have conveniently overlooked the bitter realization that the Boys of Summer have hit rock bottom.

I’m just as guilty of the offense as anyone. I’ve been so immersed in the postseason drama, I’ve barely winced when Tigers score updates flicker on the lower third of my TV screen.

But when the Red Wings and Pistons conclude their seasons in — optimistically — a couple weeks, the realization will hit me like a ton of bricks, and I’m not sure I’ll have enough antibodies to recover from the injury that ensues.

In each of the last two seasons, I’ve lived and died by the Tigers. They delivered some of the best moments in my rather pedestrian life; especially in 2006, whey they had their first winning season in what felt like forever.

I really miss that feeling.

The season is far from over, and despite the Tigers’ perpetual failure to show any signs of life, they’re only 6.5 games out of first place. The Tigers have the time, and certainly the talent to bounce back.

Let’s just hope they do.
