Kitna's antics absurd
The season opener for the Detroit Lions provided a result everyone was prepared for — an expected loss.

2008 fantasy football picks
Last year in this space, I gave everyone my fantasy football picks. Some were good suggestions, while others, I’ll admit, were pretty pitiful.

High hopes for Roger Federer
Back on July 6, I watched every rain-soaked minute, delays and all, of Rafael Nadal’s victory over Roger Federer in the Wimbledon final.
Summer sports doldrums are here
As I sit at my desk this evening pondering what I’m going to do a blog on, it occurred to me that nothing exciting is going on in the world of sports — especially since my editor Alex Altman conveniently blogged about my potential topic yesterday.
C’est la vie, as they say. I feel kind of apathetic about sports in general this week and the Josh Childress move to Greece was the only thing notable to me.
Starting off, the WNBA brawl was a definite shocker, but the novelty wears kind of thin after seeing so many brawls over the years. Not to mention losing Cheryl Ford for the season takes the fun out of the appeal of a good ol’ fashioned girl fight.
As for Detroit teams, I’m glad the Tigers have hit their stride again, inching closer to the Chicago White Sox with 61 more games to play. Granted, we’ve been pounding the Kansas City Royals, but we should give credit where it’s due for beating teams we should beat — after all the Royals have had our number earlier this season, so it’s a feat that should be heralded to some extent. Beating a team 19-4 in any baseball contest is nothing to sneeze at.
Now the test of taking the next three away from the White Sox is upon our squad. Looking at the matchups, I’d guess we can take at the least two out of three, possibly a sweep if our bats are undeterred by John Danks, Gavin Floyd, and Javier Vasquez.
The excitement just isn’t there for me though. I’ll possibly catch a game this weekend if I find nothing better to do than loaf around in my house.
It seems like this point of the year — where both the college and professional basketball and football leagues are still months away from restarting — just becomes sluggish to me.
Nothing to look forward to on “SportsCenter” but a Top 10 plays list filled with baseball vignettes of players getting bad jumps on fly balls and having to make circus catches to compensate — all under the guise of “great defense.”
I usually look forward to mixed martial arts and boxing as well, but with retirements and injuries prohibiting certain marquee match-ups from taking place, my excitement for those sports has been quelled for the time being.
Oh well. I can always pick up NCAA Football 2009 for Xbox 360 this weekend and devote hours to which Division I-AA (or whatever they call it these days) team I’ll attempt to make a powerhouse in Dynasty Mode.
Glumly as a fan I’ll trudge through the next few weeks.
