Fantasy football, week 12
No in-depth opening this week, let’s get straight to my picks:
-
Early men's hoops awards
With my term coming to an end as an MSU men’s basketball beat reporter since the spring, I can’t help but still feel connected to the team.

Appreciating the great camera work
So after the blizzard that struck during the attempted second half of Sunday’s field hockey game, I have an extra appreciation for what our camera people do.
New stadium will benefit Spartan soccer
The grass is untouched and completely smooth. The white lines are perfectly painted and the bleachers are waiting for a good stomping.
Finally, the new DeMartin Soccer Stadium will see its first action, as the men’s soccer team will host the MSU/Radisson Fall Classic this weekend. The new complex will be home for both the men’s and women’s soccer squads.
So you might be wondering, why is this new stadium a big deal?
First off, the field looks amazing. In the past, the Spartans home field could be classified as sub-par at best. However, the new complex can easily be classified as one of the premier soccer fields in the Big Ten.
Secondly, the new complex has room for 2,500 fans in the grandstand structure. All of this new space will provide an opportunity for more fans to come out to the games and support the team. Although it might take a season or two, it’s only a matter of time until more and more people get hooked on Spartan soccer.
Lastly, the new and improved soccer environment will help to attract better recruits to MSU. This will just further the program and attract even more attention to the teams. The new complex is just getting the ball rolling.
There is only one problem I see with the stadium. The small black fence directly behind the goal doesn’t have a net above it to stop the balls that are shot over the goal. This isn’t really that big of a deal, and I’m sure the problem will easily be solved by forking out an extra hot dog or two to the ball boy.
Despite having to chase an extra ball or two, the DeMartin Soccer Complex will prove to be a great place to watch a soccer game.
Both the men’s and women’s teams should be competitive in the Big Ten this year — especially with the women’s freshman sensation Laura Heyboer, and the men’s senior scoring duo of Doug DeMartin and Zac Scaffidi.
The sport of soccer is on the rise and watching the Spartans compete at the new stadium should prove to be very entertaining.
