Take in Olympic sports on campus

By: Joseph Terry Posted: 08/26/08 12:56pm

It’s a shame that sports like swimming and track and field can only grab the nation’s attention every four years.

Yes, the Olympics are fun, but mostly because we see sports that we never get to watch.

The U.S. women’s soccer team won a nail-biting gold medal match 1-0 against Brazil with a goal in overtime. But how much TV time do you see devoted to soccer in between the Olympics and the World Cup? Unless you pay extra for a sports package, there may only be a few MLS matches to watch. And that is technically the world’s most popular sport.

And how about volleyball? U.S. men’s and women’s beach teams earned medals and ratings made of gold in Beijing, while the men’s indoor team won gold and the women’s team won silver.

Wasn’t that fun to watch?

Keep that spirit alive past the Olympics and go support your nonrevenue teams at MSU.

This fall features men’s and women’s soccer teams that should contend for Big Ten titles, a field hockey team that will look to go deep into the NCAA Tournament and a volleyball team that brings in one of the most talented freshmen classes in the country.

So don’t wait until London to get your fill of these sports, they’re right on campus.
