Giants good enough to overcome Burress incident

By: Sean Ely Posted: 12/02/08 6:30pm

Did anyone else immediately relate Plaxico Burress’ incident to Cheddar Bob’s, the loyal companion of B-Rabbit (Eminem) from the movie “8 Mile”?

Yeah, it’s lame and pathetic of me, sure.

But it’s also both of those adjectives for Burress to bring a loaded pistol into a Manhattan nightclub while attempting to heal from a hamstring injury just weeks before the playoffs — fighting back to full strength to “help” his team retain the Super Bowl champion position.

Whatever though, honestly. Giants head coach Tom Coughlin doesn’t need him and doesn’t need to fret.

In my eyes, the loss of No. 17 on the Giants’ field won’t hurt Eli Manning’s squad’s chances for its second consecutive title.
Why is it that so many former MSU football stars who press on to the National Football League end up doing irresponsible, bone-headed things — such as shoot themselves or sign with the Detroit Lions?

I’m not really sure which one is worse for an athlete’s physical and mental health.

Even without Burress 100 percent healthy for the remainder of the season, the Giants will continue to give other receivers and versatile running backs more opportunities for big-time yardage, just like last Sunday against the Redskins.

Brandon Jacobs, Steve Smith, Amani Toomer, Derrick Ward, Domenik Hixson, Kevin Boss and Ahmad Bradshaw all have the ability to step up on big third-and-long situations. Unlike so many teams in the NFL, the Giants are deep — and they know it.

Manning knows what it takes to win and that recent maturity trumps the loss of Burress and his poor choice of toys to carry around at night.

The Giants will return to the Super Bowl with Manning throwing eight more TD passes with just one interception in his remaining four games. Jacobs will break the 1,300-yard mark and Toomer will continue to impress.

New York is headed to the big stage again, watch it happen — Plax or no Plax, doesn’t matter.
