Although fasting cut short, results still noticed

The combination of humidity, a sour mood and hunger pains were the last straw; I ended my fast a day early.

I’m not going to stand on a soap box and preach that everyone should try fasting. It wasn’t the easiest thing I’ve ever done and it made me feel weak and irritable. After fasting a few days, I don’t feel weak. I feel like I’ve started my body a new and healthier path. The first meal I ate was a salad. Instead of dripping salad dressing over the lettuce, I dipped the tip of my fork in a small dish of salad dressing then ate a forkful of lettuce – it cuts back on the amount of salad dressing consumed.

Even though it was extremely muggy last night, my workout buddy and I wanted to go for a run. We braved the weather and successfully finished a two-mile run. The highlight of it was when we ran through sprinklers after a mile. It was refreshing and cooled us down enough to finish our last mile. We finished by jumping in our apartment’s pool to cool down.

The thought of getting sweaty after 10 minutes of being outdoors normally would discourage me from running, but it made cleansed. Running has become one of my favorite ways to relieve stress. Adding the sensation of feeling disgusting actually made me feel more clean. I spent the rest of the night making sure that I stayed hydrated.

Learning these different ways to feel cleansed hopefully is helping me continue on the healthy path.

No one should try fasting, as many others have stated in your previous entries. If you want to lose weight it’s simple: lay off the cakes, candies and cookies and exercise.

Will you PLEASE acknowledge the comments on this site? The overwhelming opinion seems to be that fasting is NOT a healthy way to lose weight, or “be healthy.”

You have offered no evidence of the benefits of fasting for “detoxification.” Exactly what toxins are you eliminating? Why would fasting reduce or eliminate them?

I wish you would just be clear in calling itself a weight-loss blog. Hiding behind “health” is dishonest and misleading. Why don’t you go ask a physician and a dietician about the health benefits of fasting like this, then write about that?

Olin provides one-on-one appointments on request with a nutritionist for FREE. Krystle, I sincerely hope you take the comments on your blog to heart (and I sincerely hope the SN isn’t trying to sensationalize what clearly looks like the first steps to an eating disorder in order to gain readers…but I think this is based in ignorance, not malevolence).

SN, perhaps your reporters should spend time looking at campus groups like RUBI (Respecting and Understanding Body Image) and publicizing the health awareness and eating disorder awareness groups available at Olin and the Counseling Center, both of which are operational during summer session.

Krystle, I urge you to talk to a nutritionist before you seriously harm yourself; as a journalist, you have a responsibility to your readers and to yourself. SN, I hope you make amends for this truly sad series of articles by publishing information about mental and physical health resources available on campus.

Thus it is proven

I have read many a study suggesting that lack of consumption of proper nutrients affects one’s ability to think clearly. This blog, I believe, has just proven this fact. I, a scientist, someone who struggles with grammar and the like, was able to find ample mistakes in a ‘journalist’s’ article.

At the beginning of the summer I was looking forward to seeing Krystle into a new, healthier LIFESTYLE. Thus far, she has done nothing to change her LIFESTYLE, only participated in individual acts of stupidity that are not sustainable for a healthy life.

A few interesting links about fasting, for anyone interested:

being healthy and losing weight do NOT have to go hand in hand. If you are building muscle mass while losing fat, you may even gain weight.

Are you trying to get us all sick here??? Read your article, crazy stuff!!!! Not healthy for you for me or anyone else. Research is the word, before writing. Thinking, before writing. Caring about your readers, before writting..get the idea?

It’s hunger PANGS you idiot.

You are even more of an idiot for thinking that fasting had anything to do with fitness though.

This is not a healthy approach, why would this be in the SN?

Going running after a 2-day fast with nothing in your stomach except a salad is pretty dangerous. You absolutely have to increase your protein intake when you’re exercising or your body has nothing to work with. Even a granola bar with nuts is a complete protein and a good option to eat about an hour before a workout.

Also, dressing is good on a salad in moderation because the fats in the dressing help you digest the vitamins in the vegetables. The healthiest option is to make your own vinaigrettes out of olive oil so you know you’re getting high-quality fats. Also, you can put fresh fruit in homemade vinaigrettes, giving you another boost of vitamins and fiber.

I agree with above commenters – you really should see a dietitian who can talk to you about balancing your diet and getting enough of everything. You might be surprised how much protein you should be getting. Plus, it would make a good blog entry.
