Weekly Treat — An Eye On NASCAR's Finale
It pains me to take up space talking about NASCAR. My fingers hurt as I type and my brain is telling me to stop by sending a shooting pain down my arm.
But this year’s NASCAR Chase For The Cup is too good to ignore. There are more storylines than a telenovela heading into the 10-race finale.
The villainous Kyle Busch is trying to cap off one of the greatest racing seasons in NASCAR history with a championship to go with his eight wins and 15 top-five finishes.
Carl Edwards, who has boasted one of the series’ best cars in recent weeks, is trying to knock Busch off of his pedestal after a few “friendly” skirmishes.
Denny Hamlin is the hottest driver headed into the Chase.
Jeff Gordon and Dale Earnhardt Jr. can never be counted out, no matter how much they have struggled in 2008.
There’s a guy named Jimmie Johnson who also happens to be the defending Cup champion and is in the hunt.
And to top it all off, some 18-year-old kid is making his Cup Series debut this week. Logano is his name, I think.
I know NASCAR talk will probably fall on deaf ears here at MSU (finding a racing fan on campus is like trying to find a Motorhead fan at the opera), but the drama building for the Cup Series finale can’t be matched right now in sports (the term “sports” being used loosely here, of course).
I don’t claim to be a big NASCAR fan (I had the privilege, if that’s what you want to call it, of covering two NASCAR races at Michigan International Speedway this summer), but it will be fun keeping an eye on who can turn left the best among the 12 drivers left in the championship hunt.
Not too much of an eye, of course.

If you think there is so much drama, then why do you seem to dislike the sport so much. And yes it IS a sport unlike children’s games such as the incredibly boring stick and ball sports. If you find NASCAR boring you obviously don’t understand it. Watching nine grown men beating a ball with a stick and then chasing it, now that’s boring… and don’t get me started on football I totally loathe this “sport” just ask Terry Bradshaw if NASCAR is a sport after driving a Busch series car for only 25 laps he crawled out of the car and declared that those 25 laps were more demanding than anything that he had ever done on a football field. So before you write such an article as this I suggest that you have some knowledge of the subject. Put your ass in the seat and find out what a Real sport is then you can write about it without this condescending jock football is life attitude. Try NASCAR with an open mind, I can tell from what you write that you do like it you’re just afraid to admit it to your jock associates. So man up and I’ll see you at the track!!!
