On Campus — What Is MSU’s Top 10 team?
The MSU football team’s top 25 ranking in the Associated Press poll will, in all likelihood, send the campus into a tizzy not seen since 2005.
But can you name the team on campus that is already ranked?
What if I said they were in the top 10?
And had been all season?
At Ralph Young Field, the MSU field hockey team has held down a top 10 ranking since the end of August, compiling an 11-1 record and outscoring teams by a combined total of 57-15. The team’s lone loss, a 3-1 home defeat against Syracuse, came at the hands of the No. 2 team in the nation, despite doubling the Orange’s number of shots on goal.
My colleague, field hockey reporter Joe Terry, assures me the Spartans’ field hockey team has a legitimate shot at winning a national title, which means they probably have the best chance of bringing home the hardware among the teams in East Lansing. Not football, baseball or even men’s basketball has better odds than the field hockey squad (the hockey team, it can be argued, has a strong chance at title dreams).
With eight consecutive wins, the Spartans are on a streak they should carry into this weekend’s showdown with No. 3 Wake Forest, a game that could propel MSU farther into the national picture.
All the focus will be thrown onto the football team’s exploits this weekend, but right next door, there’s a team you shouldn’t sleep on if you’re a true Spartans fan of all sports.
