Video: Some Pigs

In an interdisciplinary project that started three years ago among the MSU Student Organic Farm, the Residential Initiative on the Study of the Environment (RISE) and the Department of Animal Science, five hogs were brought to the farm on Sept. 14 to be raised in a more sustainable manner than traditional farming methods. Laurie Thorp, program director of RISE and the person who spearheaded the project, feeds the pigs on their first night spent on the farm. “I went home that night, and I think I cried. It was a seminal moment in my life, as an animal welfare advocate, as an environmentalist, as someone who wants to see change in the food system.” Watch to see how Thorp and the others who brought this project to life help the pigs adjust to their new life outside the pen.
