    East Lansing police arrested 23 people Saturday night and also had three times more assault calls than each of this year's previous two football Saturdays.On the same day MSU police arrested 131 people 151 a 54 percent increase compared to the number of arrests on the 2004 Notre Dame game day.MSU spokesman Terry Denbow and Lee June vice president of student affairs and services declined to comment about the arrest statistics from Saturday.June who was part of the discussions that led to tailgating rule changes in 2004 declined to comment Tuesday."I prefer to yield my comments to Fred Poston since he's been the one looking at numbers" June said.Poston MSU's vice president for finance and operations said Sunday he would review MSU police reports Monday and provide comment but he did not return calls Tuesday.Denbow declined to comment on the arrest statistics because he said MSU officials are still analyzing the figures."The numbers might not seem extremely truthful when looking at them the first time" Denbow said.

    Correction The story should have stated that there was a 54 percent increase in total game-day arrests from when MSU played Notre Dame in East Lansing two years ago.Total game day arrests on campus increased 35 percent from when MSU played Notre Dame two years ago.MSU police arrested 131 people Saturday compared to 85 game-day arrests when the teams last met in East Lansing.In addition MSU police issued 55 MIPs Saturday and arrested others for several trespassing drug violation and drunk and disorderly offenses.

    Detroit 151 Proof a member of rap group D12 and a close friend of Eminem was shot to death early Tuesday at a nightclub along Eight Mile the road made famous by the 2002 film that starred Eminem and in which Proof had a bit part.The death of Proof 151 whose real name is Deshaun Holton 151 was confirmed by Dennis Dennehy the publicist for D12's label Interscope Records as well as by Detroit police spokesman James Tate."Memorial service arrangements are still being made and his friends and family would appreciate privacy during this difficult time" Dennehy said in a statement.MSU communication senior and rapper Joe Perye said the news gave him chills."He would be the last person you would expect to get killed" said Perye who knew Proof and many of the artists he worked with.

    From staff and wire reports Graceland Fruit Inc. and the state have been negotiating a civil settlement in a dumping case involving thousands of gallons of blueberry waste.Donald Nugent a member of the MSU Board of Trustees is president and chief executive officer of the Frankfort-based company.The State News could not reach Nugent after repeated attempts Sunday and university spokesman Terry Denbow was unable to be reached for comment.Farmer Charles Brozofsky said he discovered contamination illegally dumped upstream from his property in Benzie County in late 2002.The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality or DEQ began an investigation into the dumping in 2003 and eventually recommended that criminal charges be pursued against Graceland Fruit Inc. and Bonney Bros.

    From staff reportsThe State NewsIncumbent Vic Loomis and challenger Kevin Beard took the two seats in East Lansing's City Council election Tuesday and an MSU student took third over the other incumbent Bill Sharp.With all precincts reporting Loomis won 29.01 percent of the votes Beard won 28.16 percent challenger and MSU student John Fournier won 22.14 percent and incumbent Bill Sharp received 20.33 percent of the vote.Loomis who will begin his second term on the council said this term will be his last."We're going to do another hard four years just like we did last time" Loomis said.
