Editorial board out of touch with average Michiganian
I cannot believe the State News editorial board took a stance saying that the elimination of the Michigan Promise Scholarship is “necessary” (SN 6/24).
Pulling out headline misleads readers, sensationalizes issue
While I agree that the article Got protection? Study shows pulling out effective (SN 6/8) featured a topic that was both interesting and appropriate, its title was not.

MSU bike registration policy unfair, needs revamping
Updated 06/09/2009 7:44pmOn May 21, I rode my bike to the MSU Veterinary Medical Center. After a long day, I walked outside to discover that someone had stolen my bike! I walked inside the clinic to get the number of the campus police from the receptionist, only to find out that she had seen an MSU truck with numerous bikes on a trailer pass by.

Pulling out article leaves out critical information about study
Updated 06/09/2009 7:47pmI think the comments at statenews.com about the article Got protection? Study finds pulling out effective (SN 6/8) speak for themselves: The withdrawal method is not newsworthy and students still do not feel that it is an effective form of birth control.

Assisted suicide should remain private matter for families
Updated 06/03/2009 9:04pmFor months I hadn’t thought about 1963; not even one bad dream. But the editorial by Gabrielle Moore, Assisted suicide not real answer (SN 6/1), brought it all back.

Campus fine art show deserving of coverage
Updated 05/19/2009 7:39pmIt is 6:15 p.m. I have been working all day at the university and I am tired. I would like to go home to at least eat dinner and relax a bit before I mow the lawn, but I do have to comment on the front page article of Monday’s issue of The State News.

Stereotypes about military do not apply to all members
Updated 04/30/2009 7:34pmI’m writing in response to a letter written by Bradley Gershel, Obama must bring real change by ending brutal policies of past (SN 4/29). I have never served in the military but many of my closest friends currently are serving in both the Marine Corps and U.S. Army.

Expensive textbooks should at least be high quality, correct
Updated 04/30/2009 7:35pmI purchased “Understanding Statistics in the Behavioral Sciences” by Robert R. Pagano for a psychology statistics class this semester. I was surprised when the price tag read nearly $165 because it was a small book with no interesting pictures and boring black and blue print. When I got the book home and inspected it closer, I noticed a whole chapter near the back of the book was bound upside down!

Responsible environment key to safely enjoying alcohol
Updated 04/29/2009 7:00pmIn response to Anupama Sridaran’s letter Students need to understand consequences of drinking (SN 4/23), Anupama is correct in stating there is a large percentage of underage drinking on college campuses throughout the United States. Anupama is also correct in stating that in some cases, the use and abuse of alcohol can be a detriment to the studies and career paths of some students.

Obama must bring real change by ending brutal policies of past
Updated 04/28/2009 7:36pmIt has been argued by leading scholars such as Noam Chomsky that our efforts in the War on Terror have made us less safe. American foreign policy as of late has exempted itself from international law while sanctioning those who are deemed as threats, and it is this kind of behavior that fuels the flame that is extremist anti-American sentiment.

Common arguments against gay marriage need to be dispelled
Updated 04/27/2009 7:17pmSince the 2009 Miss USA pageant, there has been a surge of pundits jumping at the chance to subjugate gays. Due to this egregious attempt to bastardize, and subsequently isolate, the gay community, it is incumbent upon gays to address several topics. Homosexuals in America, eager to quell the Christian radicalism masked as conservatism, need first to perform a self-evaluation.

Column about feminism spoke to goals of MSU gender center
Updated 04/23/2009 7:35pmWe were delighted to read Kate Jacobson’s column Women’s rights a worldwide issue (SN 4/21). It was an insightful and passionate account of the situation for some Afghani women struggling to stay free of violence in their streets and homes.
We also appreciated Jacobson’s reflection on the relationship between our rights at home and the rights of women in other countries.
